The Equine Center
The
Equine Center at The Ohio State-Agriculture Technical Institute (ATI)
was opened in the fall of 2000. The center is part of ATI’s 1,725
acre working farm and is located on Apple Creek Road in Apple Creek,
approximately 5 miles from ATI’s campus. The center encompasses
approximately 100 acres and maintains a group of about 65 to 85 head
of horses, depending upon the time of year.
Barn
The Equine Center consists of a 48 stall barn which contains two large
foaling stalls, tack room, and wash rack. The barn contains a fully
functional laboratory with modern equipment for conducting a variety
of procedures including: semen concentration and motility evaluation,
packaging for shipment of cooled semen, ultrasound evaluation, colostrum
quality evaluation, centrifugation. The breeding shed is located within
the north wing of the barn and boasts two restraint stocks, teasing
area, and breeding phantom.
Paddocks & Pastures
Surrounding the barn are several 1 to 4 acre paddocks. Located along
the north-west side of the barn, several mixed grass pastures are available.
Arenas
Outdoor: 120’ x 240’ with Fibar® footing
Indoor: 85’ x 185’ lighted with shredded leather footing
Horses
Currently, included within the breeding herd are Quarter Horse, Standardbred,
Paint, and Thoroughbred broodmares and foals. ATI-owned and client mares are
foaled each year at the center, providing an opportunity to the students for
hands-on instruction in foaling, breeding, and subsequent mare and foal care.
The center currently owns and stands four stallions:
Mahogany Hall, Thoroughbred
Hooierpersonality, Paint
Tribute’s Renaissance, Morgan
Scallion Hanover, Standardbred
Foals produced at the center are progeny of stallions maintained at the center
or outside stallions. Selected foals are sold as weanlings or yearlings through
private sale or public auction and are an important source of income for recurring
costs at the center. Other selected foals are retained as Two-Year-Olds and used
as part of the saddle horse training course.
The horses used in the equitation courses represent a variety of breeds including
Quarter Horse, Arabian, Paint, Thoroughbred, Grade horses and one Mule.
